I Have an Agent!!!!!!

I started querying recently, keeping it silent because I was afraid to tell anyone that I was at that point. I didn’t want to be embarrassed. I literally told nobody. So when I got my first few rejections, my friends and family didn’t know why I was so sad. The good news is that those few letters came after a very fast request for the full, but I still kept it all in.

This isn’t the first book I’ve written and I’ve queried other work before. So it was kind of a stealth query batch sent out the weekend of 2/21. I sent this batch Sunday; by Monday morning, I had a request for a full. Followed almost immediately by a form rejection. Tuesday, two more form rejections came in. Wednesday, the agent with the full started it – and I saw on Twitter that she was loving a requested MS and I tried not to hope it was mine. And then as soon as she finished on Twitter, I got an email. She wanted to talk!!

Four days. By Thursday morning I had an offer and had to nudge people who had just received the queries a day or two earlier. When one rejection would come in, a new query had gone out and now I had a bunch of people to contact. By the end of the day Thursday, I had multiple fulls out and an offer. That weekend, I decided to withdraw the manuscript from a couple remaining agents who hadn’t replied yet to the nudge, because I was already so happy and confident in the agent who’d offered and the ones reading it.

It has been one heck of a week, I tell you! I can’t even believe this is real and I’m here in my life. I’ve had time to process different offers and ask a lot of questions. And now, having thought very hard about it, I’m able to tell you that I’ve signed with Mandy Hubbard of Emerald City Literary Agency. It was a very tough decision because the book resonated with the people I spoke with and I couldn’t have made a bad choice. I feel confident that this will be a good experience and I’m so excited about the next step.
